About Joy & Hope
Over the past quarter century, Joy and Hope of Haiti have built 27 Christian schools. Although there is public education in Haiti .. the government is inconsistent in funding it. As a result only 20% of children attend school and quite often teachers do not get paid. We currently support 11 schools with the hope of increasing this number.
Only 20% of children who want to go to public school have the opportunity to go. Children who receive schooling are far better equipped to face the difficult life faced by the people of Haiti and gives them a real opportunity to make a difference for the future.
Our special ‘matching programs’ see local communities paying a percentage of the costs needed to run the school while Joy and Hope covers the rest. Although every school is different, typically, we pay two-thirds to three-quarters of the costs because unemployment is so high and as a result people in our communities are often living in extreme poverty.
