Welcome to the Joy and Hope of Haiti Website

Background

The Joy and Hope of Haiti is comprised of a group of individuals who volunteer their time and energy to help the children and people of Haiti.

The Haiti Projects run under The Joy and Hope of Haiti are blessed by our many generous workers, all of whom give of their time, talents and energy voluntarily. No one is paid; everyone who travels to Haiti as part of a work team pays his/her own way - and because of this, there are no administration costs. That means that every donation of goods or money made to the Haiti Project truly finds its way to the people we want to help - the Haitians.

As The Joy and Hope of Haiti has blossomed over the years, many of the volunteers have felt drawn to organize and oversee particular projects, each of which is an integral and important part of the success of The Joy and Hope of Haiti. Listed below is an outline of our main projects, and contacts for each. If you are interested in any particular area and wish to join in, we encourage you to contact the relevant people below.

If you are more comfortable helping out from behind the scenes and would like to submit a cash donation towards any of the projects, please contact Ron North at ron.north@sympatico.ca or mail to 170 Hillcrest Ave., Hamilton, ON L8P 2X4. All donations are eligible for tax purposes and a charitable tax receipt will be issued to you.

   Community Connections

Theres a number of connections and cross-connections with others involved in Haiti efforts:

Birthing Kit Project

The Joy and Hope of Haiti Birthing Kit committee efforts are connected with:
People involved in Grace Children's Hospital, Port au Prince, Haiti (International Child Care, Mississauga, Ontario)
Dr. Henry Muggah and Dr. Bob Hutchison (McMaster University Medical Centre)
Dr. Alex Dauphne (St. Joseph's Hospital)
Birthing Kits require assembly and many "birthing kit parties" much like Tupperware parties have been organized by community groups, school groups, church groups in various venues.
Last year alone 50,000 birthing kits were assembled and sent to hospitals and medical clinics in the north of Haiti.

Containers to Haiti

The Joy and Hope of Haiti sends 40' x 8' x 8' containers regularly (at least once or twice a year) filled with new construction equipment and supplies and donated medical supplies and equipment, school supplies and other items needed in Haiti. Many community connections have been made as a result of the container efforts. See the wish list posted on this website.

Healthy Smiles for Haiti

Georgina Cosentino (who lives on Hamilton mountain) is a dental hygienist who travels to Haiti twice a year promoting good dental health with children at schools and orphanages, both in northern and southern Haiti. Because of her dedication, much needed dental equipment and supplies are also shipped to Haiti in the containers.

High School Student Volunteers

There are opportunities for high school students to complete their 40 volunteer hours either helping at fundraisers or going to Haiti.

The willingness to get involved and help those who are much less fortunate than us is the vital ingredient to the success of the Joy and Hope of Haiti volunteer group. We are helping to make a difference, one life at a time - their children, our challenge and our joy.
