2000

The project designated for the fall of 2000 was to complete construction of a combined school and church in the Fougerole neighbourhood of Cap Haitien. Over $100,000 was raised for this project, primarily the result of the Charity Auction and Race for Haiti fundraising events which were held in 1999. During a four week period from October 15th, 2000 - November 11, 2000, 48 men, women and students from the Hamilton area travelled down to Haiti to assist in the construction of this school and church.

During the second week the team started to put the trusses up on the roof of the church. In addition, they worked hard each morning plastering all the walls in the school rooms and in the stairwells and in the afternoon taught English to the children. Even though the school and church was not complete at this point, a makeshift school next to where the school and church was being built had been in operation serving as the location for all the different classes. Under this makeshift building with a corrugated tin roof, the children gathered on rough wooden benches to learn. During the project, one classroom was completely finished and the class moved in to use it as soon as it was done. Blackboards were installed at a later point.
