H.E.A.R.T.S

Beginning in the late 1980's a member of St. Andrew's Church in Fergus, Ontario joined with Men for Missions in the installation of water pumps in various locations in the north of Haiti. While there he had the opportunity to meet a young pastor, Emmanuel (Mano) Eugene. As a result of this meeting the shipment of clothing and other supplies became an annual event at St. Andrew’s called the "Pipeline of Hope". This shipment of aid to Pastor Mano and his congregation, Ebenezer Baptist Church, continued through the 1990's with several shipments being handled by the Canadian Forces who were part of a contingent of military and civilian advisers who were attempting to assist the Haitian people following the deposing of the Duvalier dynasty.

Starting in 1995 the raising of aid became more formalized becoming one of both material and financial assistance. The financial assistance being used to assist Pastor Mano in the feeding of one meal daily to approximately forty orphans and the payment of salaries for teachers in Kindergarten through Grade six. It was also at this time that the name of the group was changed to H.E.A.R.T.S. (Haitians Educated and Reaching Toward Salvation) to reflect the new mandate to not only feed but to educate Haitians within a Christian setting.

Since that time H.E.A.R.T.S. has provided funding bi-weekly to assist Pastor Mano in his ministry raising the amount sent to its current level of $750.00 USD. This bi-weekly contribution continues to fund the noon-day meal for sixty plus orphans, the salaries for both primary and secondary teachers, the salaries for trade instructors in tailoring, cooking and English, as well as pastors at Ebenezer Baptist Church and three affiliated congregations.

A variety of methods are used to raise the necessary funding including individual donors, events such as our annual walkathon and auction, and our monthly hotdog Sunday. Together with are friends and partners at Melville United Church in Fergus, Amos Presbyterian Church in Dromore, and an Anglican congregation in Nova Scotia we have achieved much in the past ten years. With three hundred plus students and a congregation in excess of one thousand Pastor Mano has, with God's help, transformed a garbage dump in the slums of Cap Haitien into an oasis of hope and encouragement for a community that previously knew only despair and squalor. Pastor Mano's vision continues in the care of his church and family.

Our challenge, more than ever, is to continue to bring hope and joy to the children of Haiti and through our prayers and contributions to bring to fruition Pastor Mano's vision of a better life for his people.
